Radio Buying Advice

Buying in a shop Ask for a demonstration but be aware that reception in the shop can be affected by televisions or other electrical goods on display, or by the structure of the building.

Shop around If you’re looking for a bargain it’s well worth shopping around. Expensive world band radios in particular, can often be found below their recommended retail price.

Different Badges There are a number of radios, which although badged by different manufacturers are in fact identical. This particularly applies to Roberts shortwave radios.
Check also when you are comparing prices that the radios have the same accessories included - if not, add them to the price!

Mail-order If you can’t find a local radio supplier, have limited mobility, or are after a bargain, mail-order can offer a good way of obtaining a radio.

Postage and Packing Some mall order retailers offer free postage and packing, others charge - this is usually between £5 - £10.

Ring around Compare prices and ask what the supplier charges for postage and packing. Ask what guarantee comes with the radio.

Check availability Before you part with your money - ask whether the radio is in stock – and ask how long it will take for delivery.

Use a credit card Pay by credit card. It is much safer than sending cash. It has the additional benefit that many credit card companies provide insurance (for a limited
time) for items purchased using their card. This may only cover items valued at more than £50 or £100 - so check your card details first. Only send cash by registered post.

Keep a record of your order, or if by phone, the time and date when you made calls and to whom you were talking. This could be useful in the event of any problems occurring.

Warranty Most products are on a 12 month return-to-supplier warranty.

Using the internet The same principles apply as for mail order shopping. Bargains can be had, but you don’t get the service associated with a specialist radio dealer. Some specialist radio dealers such as Simply Radios and O’Gormans maintain useful internet sites where you can check prices, find information, or place an order.
